A working optical media verification lab, not a checklist.

Every disc we sell has been hand-stamped by an ISO 16363-certified bench inside our 22,000 sq ft Lancaster, Pennsylvania facility. We don't outsource the inspection. We don't trust the barcode. We open the case, seat the disc, and read the layer ourselves.

§ 02 Verification Protocol

What "Verified" actually means at this lab.

A disc carrying our Verified stamp has cleared four sequential phases. Each phase is logged on a tamper-evident serial, photographed, and counter-signed by the technician who ran it. There is no batch exemption. There is no SKU-level override.

  1. Phase 01

    Delamination & Bond-Shear Test

    Each disc is seated in a calibrated bond-shear fixture and torqued against an aluminum reference substrate. Delamination events above 0.4 mm displacement, edge-lift along the inner hub, or adhesive bleed through the data zone are grounds for rejection before signal testing begins.

  2. Phase 02

    Pit / Land Signal Integrity Read

    The disc is spun across three rotational speeds on a reference-grade reader and sampled at 14 radial positions. We measure jitter, C1 / C2 error rates, and BLER against the manufacturer's original mastering certificate — not against a generic "playable" floor.

  3. Phase 03

    Dye-Layer Oxidation Screening

    The reflective and dye layers are read under 200× magnification against an archival reference set. Cyanine, phthalocyanine, and azo-dye discs are flagged separately. Oxidation halos, bronzing, and pinhole perforation of the metal layer are photographed and recorded on the chain-of-custody certificate.

  4. Phase 04

    Barcode, Tracklist & Provenance Cross-Check

    The disc's matrix code, label catalog number, and tracklist are cross-checked against three independent bibliographic databases — Discogs, AllMusic, and the Library of Congress name authority — before the disc is permitted to enter the catalog as a Verified SKU.

§ 03 The Benches

Eleven stations of inspection and archival preparation.

The lab occupies a dedicated wing of our Lancaster facility with independent climate control (45 ± 2% RH, 18 °C). Every station is calibrated weekly against NIST-traceable references and logged in the maintenance ledger that accompanies each year's ISO re-certification.

Industrial Disc Polishers

Three standalone resurfacing stations remove micro-scratches and oxidation haze from the polycarbonate face without thinning the substrate below 1.1 mm — the floor required for long-term archival stability.

Electrolytic Reflectivity Meters

Two four-point probe stations measure the metallic-layer reflectivity across the disc's full radius, isolating oxidation halos and metal-layer thinning that visual inspection cannot catch.

Accelerated-Aging Chambers

Two programmable chambers hold 80 °C / 85% RH for 96-hour screening runs. Discs flagged for archival-grade inventory are sampled from every lot and aged here before the lot is approved.

Microscope Benches

Five stereo benches — each isolated on a Sorbothane pad — read at 40×, 100×, and 200×. We do not inspect a disc by eye alone; every Verified SKU has at least three photographs on file at lab resolution.

§ 04 The People

The people who stamp the discs.

Eleven verification technicians and four ALM-certified archivists staff the lab across two shifts, six days a week. Every Verified stamp on a BestCDDVD disc carries the initials of the technician who ran the bench and the archivist who signed off.

Each technician completes a 14-week in-house residency on the bond-shear, signal-integrity, and dye-classification benches before they are permitted to stamp a disc on their own. The average tenure on the bench is now 6.4 years.

ALM-Certified Archivists

Four archivists — each holding an Academy of Certified Archivists ALM certification — own the final reconciliation step. They cross-check bibliographic data, sign the chain-of-custody certificate, and hold the authority to remove a disc from inventory on provenance alone.

Every disc sold as Archival Grade ships with a numbered chain-of-custody certificate. For institutional buyers — university libraries, regional archives, museum registrars — that certificate is the document your auditor will ask for first. We've published the underlying template below so your collection can adopt the same fields internally, free of charge.
