After the first two CSNY recordings, Stephen Stills broke out into his own with some solo efforts and a second band, Manassas, backed up by CSNY session men Dallas Taylor on drums, Paul Harris on keyboards, Fuzzy Samuels on bass, Al Perkins on electric slide guitar, Joe Lala on congas and the stiff but talented Chris Hillman, of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers fame.
The Manassas band was a change from the hard rock electric sound established by Stills in Buffalo Springfield and was one of the first bands to bring a MOR blending of country and rock to a hip audience.
The program was taped in Germany in a television studio without announcer or audience. Stills and band play the numbers with very little chatter between numbers, taking advantage of the German show?s policy of letting bands play their numbers without interruption or editing of musical numbers. The result is a short but sweet DVD sampling of this band.
All the songs were from the first Manassas album, a double "record" set that gives us a good sampling of the more memorable songs of this band. Some of my favorites were missing, such as "Love Gangster", "Move Around" and "Blues Man" but it is still a good set.
